We all know how unpredictable the weather in Michigan can be, especially during wedding season. From rainy days in mid-July to cold nights in August, you never know how the day will turn out. When you plan for your summer wedding, you should also consider that it may not feel like true summer. And just like rain plans, you will want to have a cold weather plan. We never hope for inclement weather but we have seen mother nature be less than accommodating.
How Cold is Too Cold?
When it comes to having an outdoor reception, there is always a risk that the weather may not cooperate. Once it drops to 65 degrees or lower at night, guest comfort can become a concern. Not only can the temperature play a factor, but we all know how wind and rain can create a mix of cold weather on its own. But not to worry, there are many ways to remedy inclement weather to keep guests dancing all night!
What to Consider Renting
A few rental items can go a long way to ensure you and your guests are warm enough to enjoy the party!
If you are having your party outside under a tent, one option is to rent tent sides. Tent walls can help contain heat and create a warmer environment. The great thing about tent sides is that you don’t have to install them around all four sides. If the wind is only coming from one direction, you have the option to only put tent walls on that side. This small addition will make a huge impact on the quality of the event. Not only will the event space stay warmer, but you won’t have to worry about the wind blowing anything over.
Additionally, renting a patio heater or two can provide a space for guests to stay warm. While patio heaters may not heat the entire area, they will significantly reduce the cold weather blues. Patio heaters are great rentals to have spaced out in the area and give guests a warm place to mingle.
Still too cold? You may want to consider renting a tent heater. While this may seem like an extreme option, a tent heater with sides will certainly heat up the venue. The heater has a dial that allows you to adjust the temperature just like your home thermostat would. This option is perfect for events in late-October through December when it may seem impossible to have an outdoor event. Believe it or not, the tent heater has allowed our clients to have events under a tent even when snowing!
Additional Options for Cold Weather
With Pinterest at the ready for most couples, you can surely find cute, “stay warm” options that will blend wonderfully with your decor! Here are just a couple of our favorites:
Host a Hot Cocoa Bar: A bar with warm hot cocoa and coffee would surely take away the chill. This option is totally customizable and can be darling! You can easily rent a few hot water dispensers to create a self-serve station. Also, you can stay consistent with your decor by incorporating your wedding colors. This can be done by using similar flowers around the display, colored mugs, or the same type of candles from your tables.
Provide Blankets: Setting out a few blankets can be a wonderful option for your guests. You can even purchase cute throw blankets to use as wedding favors. Or if you aren’t providing favors, a handful will do just fine! Remember that not every guest will need or want to use a blanket.
The chance of cold weather shouldn’t stop you from having the event you’ve been planning! The key is preparation. By thinking ahead, you can ensure your event will go as planned even when it’s chilly outside. Let us know how we can help prepare for a cold night as you plan for your event!
